Interior Design: A Chat with the Architect  

As Mozaic Concierge Living enters the construction phase, we’re thrilled to present an exclusive conversation with Alejandro Giraldo, one of the visionary Principals in charge at Perkins Eastman. Known for his exceptional contributions to interior design, Alejandro’s innovative approaches have helped shape the vision for our community, along with countless other projects that have come before. 

In this Q&A, Alejandro invites us behind the curtain of his creative process, offering a rare glimpse into the inspirations and challenges that fueled his design for our community. From discussing emerging trends around designing modern interiors, to sharing insights on how those designs can elevate the experience of Members, this conversation is as enlightening as it is exciting.

1. Can you share the inspiration behind the architectural vision for Mozaic Concierge Living? What influences shaped your approach to designing this community?

Our architectural strategy seamlessly integrates the client’s visionary approach with the growing demand for a full continuum of care – all while offering an upscale lifestyle in a desirable location.  

Situated among natural landscapes, including the nearby creek, the site’s steep topography posed challenges that we developed as opportunities. Examples of how these were addressed were a landscaped buffer zone, along with water features to enhance the arrival experience.  

The design itself offers diverse residential options – including independent living residences and manors – all connected to central amenities for equitable access.  

Community spaces are centered around a courtyard to promote social interaction, while outdoor features such as walking trails and gardens complement the natural surroundings. A healthcare wing is integrated with central amenities to ensure operational efficiency, continuum of care, and Member convenience. 

2. What were some of the ways you blended practicality with luxury to create a space that’s both functional and beautifully designed for the members at Mozaic Concierge Living?

The entire campus integrates practicality and luxury through a blend of strategic design and material choices.  

Functionally speaking, the design prioritizes accessibility with a central courtyard layout that ensures equal proximity to amenities while also encouraging social engagement amongst neighbors, staff, and guests alike. In terms of material selection, we’ve chosen to incorporate regional elements like Jerusalem stone, merging cultural authenticity with sophisticated aesthetics.  

The community offers diverse residence options, including independent living residences and manor homes ranging from 840 to 2,160 square feet, tailored to suit all the sorts of unique lifestyles we expect members to enjoy at Mozaic Concierge Living. Outdoor amenities only serve to enhance that well-being through thoughtfully designed walking trails and gardens that harmonize natural beauty with functionality for the ultimate sense of relaxation and activity. 

3. Sustainability has become a major focus in modern architecture. What ecofriendly or sustainable design practices were implemented in this project, and how do they complement the overall vision of Mozaic Concierge Living?

While this project is not pursuing certifications such as LEED or WELL, it has been thoughtfully designed with sustainability in mind. 

Key features include: 

• A continuous exterior insulation with a rain screen system 
• Energy-efficient glazing 
• Variant refrigerant flow heating and cooling systems with energy recover 
• Energy Star appliances, and 
• Dark sky-compliant exterior lighting 

Common areas around the community feature occupancy sensor lighting, while the landscaping incorporates native plantings and additional greenery to mitigate any sort of heat island effect. The project also emphasizes flood resiliency, transit-supportive density, and publicly accessible open space, further reflecting our collective commitment to environmental responsibility and the well-being of our community members and their homes. 

4. How do modern technologies and amenities – such as smart home features or wellness focused designs – integrate into the community to enhance members’ quality of life? 

Modern technologies and amenities, such as wireless nurse call systems and smart media panels, are transforming communities by enhancing members’ quality of life.  

Wireless nurse call systems provide real-time location tracking and instant communication, ensuring members in Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing receive timely care, increasing the overall sense of safety. These systems empower caregivers to respond efficiently, reducing stress and fostering a secure environment.  

All residences are also equipped with smart media panels, offering members a source of centralized control for their Wi-Fi and smart home services, helping foster a smooth and seamless integration of any connected devices. These panels lay the foundation for advanced functionalities like data management and personalized automation, creating a more convenient and connected living experience. Together, these innovations improve safety, accessibility, and the overall well-being of members within the community.

5. What sets the architectural design of Mozaic Concierge Living apart from other senior living communities? Can you highlight any unique or unexpected elements that members will particularly appreciate? 

Of course I can! Mozaic Concierge Living’s architectural design stands out from other senior living communities through several unique elements, including:
